Dives and Delights: Nightlife in Grand Forks Beyond Downtown

Grand Forks is most alive during weekend nights. After all, we are a college town! Little do you know that there are some hidden gems around town where you can go drink and socialize that are beyond the downtown scene. As for me, I enjoy catching up with friends over food and drinks. I’ve been to 20+ bars in Grand Forks alone, but here are some of my favorite and unique options in the Grand Forks area.

The Office Pub in Grand Forks.

Nightlife in Grand Forks: The Office Pub & Grub

I initially became interested in The Office because of its familiar name. Although it may not be a paper company (like the show) it is a unique and spacious bar off of Washington. Funny enough, many people comment on how The Office is their favorite after work bar, which makes sense given that they’re open every day from 3PM until 12-2AM, except for Sundays.

Inside The Office, you can find lots of space, entertainment, slot machines, darts, and pool tables. There isn’t a lack of TVs for those who like to watch sports. Overall, The Office offers a relaxed, low-light ambiance that helps you wind down at the end of the day.

Insider tip!   If you’re one who likes sweet drinks, try their pink panther drink!

Sin Bin Bar and Casino in Grand Forks.

Nightlife in Grand Forks: SIN BIN Kitchen Bar Casino

I had never been to Sin Bin before, but I got curious after looking at their reviews. Apparently, they’re known for having the second-best pizza in Grand Forks. I’m not sure which place is first, but Sin Bin is the #1 in my heart in terms of places to drink.

The atmosphere in Sin Bin was phenomenal — staff was friendly, service was speedy, and the place was pristine. I’m a big interior design fan and the place was just beautiful. It was red, open, and modern. If you’re looking for a new place to go on a date, I’d highly recommend Sin Bin. Oh, did I mention that Sin Bin shares the same building as Red Pepper?

Insider tip!   Margarita with Patron and Cointreau is their most famous drink.

Judy's Tavern in Grand Forks.

Nightlife in Grand Forks: Judy’s Tavern

Judy’s is a Grand Forks staple. If you would ask a local, this is one of the top things they would always recommend.

Moreover, one could say Judy’s has an interesting exterior. It looked like a tiny house around the neighborhood, but will delightfully surprise you with a small pub feel when you get inside. Although it seemed like everyone knew each other, the environment was still very inviting. If you like to avoid crowds, I highly recommend Judy’s.

Insider tip!   Before visiting Judy’s, keep in mind that Judy’s doesn’t serve mixed drinks, only tap beers and cooler drinks.

The Bun Lounge in Grand Forks.

Nightlife in Grand Forks: The Bun Lounge

Buzzing and booming with life, The Bun is the place to be–especially after a hockey game!

When I went, the place was packed. Still, I experienced great, speedy, and attentive service. The bartenders and customers also made sure I felt welcomed after knowing it was my first time there. I would say the people from the Bun were the epitome of North Dakota nice.

Additionally, the Bun was the most spacious out of all the bars in Grand Forks that offered a variety of seating and entertainment. From pool, pull tabs, darts, or Blackjack – the Bun basically has everything.

Insider tip!    When you come here, be sure to try their signature drinks: the Bloody Mary and Caesar.

Kelly's Bar in Grand Forks.

Nightlife in Grand Forks: Kelly’s Bar

While Kelly’s is located downtown, it is not your typical downtown bar. It is an upscale dive bar, says the owner.

As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted with friendly staff and a laid-back atmosphere. I even asked them about their best drink and they did not disappoint! So, if you like shots, I suggest the Fire Crotch shot, which tastes like the pop ‘Crush’. Then, if you prefer a full drink, get a Stole Razz Soda. It is very light and lemony.

Kelly’s is mainly known for bingo and pool, but, the most exciting thing I found out is that they are open everyday from noon until 1-2AM, except for Sundays when Kelly’s is closed. Not many places in Grand Forks are open that late, so this is one of the reliable places to stop by after work or a long day.

Insider tip!   It just costs $0.25 to play pool here. Where else would you find that?

Special mentions:

*Southgate. Well-lit and vibes are great, and the bartender is super attentive. I would go here for Tuesday/ Saturday bingo nights.

*The Diamond. Ask for a Jolly Rancher made by Steve, I don’t like vodka drinks but this one is an exception because it was just that good.

Drinking is an inevitable part of our culture. When you’re sad, you drink. When you’re happy, you drink. When you want to socialize, you drink. After hockey games? We drink! As such, the places I’ve listed are suggestions that one could go that is not the typical downtown bars. I am lucky that Grand Forks offers us a variety of places to drink, so if you haven’t been to these places, I highly suggest that you try them! Maybe you’ll find “the Spot” for you in Grand Forks.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

There’s only one Nichole Dumlao in the Midwest and indubitably, that’s me! Hailing all the way from the Philippines, I was living at Valley City, ND. I then moved to Grand Forks for college. Being a freshman in a new town, I was looking to make my college experience much enjoyable. Thus, I went on a quest to try new places and experiences. As such, I volunteered, attended local events, and tried all the restaurants that I could find. Three years later, one could say that I have revamped as a Grand Forks local. As a nursing student now, I like to study at coffee shops, and libraries. I also like to head to parks to meditate or observe the Aurora (when it’s in season). But believe me when I say there’s so much to still see from Grand Forks!
