Grand Forks Live Music: Empire MusicBox

The Music Box Series at the Empire Arts Center is a monthly showcase where local bands (whether you’re a pro or just starting out) can take the stage in a professional venue. Bands typically play 30- to 40-minute sets, and the evening usually features around four bands (shows run Saturdays from 7–10 PM).

Before the official show begins, there’s an open jam session — anyone can hop on stage and improvise with other musicians. It’s a great way to meet like-minded folks, and hey, you might just find your next bandmates there!

Admission is $10 and they sell popcorn, water, sodas, and candy inside. If you’re playing, you get in for free.

Grand Forks Live Music: Half Brothers Brewing Company

Half Brothers is one of my favorite spots in town, not just for their craft beer and pizza deals, but for the vibe. On many Friday and Saturday nights, their cozy basement comes alive with live music.

I recommend arriving a bit early because  you can grab a bite to eat, try your hand at the pinball machines, or sit down for a board game with friends before heading downstairs to enjoy the show. It’s the kind of place where you can make a whole evening out of it.

You can catch local bands and out-of-state musicians performing both covers and original sets in an intimate setting. After the show, stick around for a cold beer and chat with the band — and don’t forget to grab some of the free popcorn at the bar.

Some shows have a cover charge, others don’t. The best way to keep up is to follow them on Facebook!

Grand Forks Live Music: DogMahal DogHaus

One of the things I love about Grand Forks is the local support for up-and-coming bands, and DogMahal really leans into that.

It’s not just a place for amazing hot dogs, it’s also a home for indie and local music. They frequently host small music fests featuring bands across genres, from hip hop to heavy metal, all in their funky and welcoming space. If you’ve never been there, you’ll find a spot full of character with vinyl records, old-school VHS tapes, comics, and comfy furniture.

If you’re looking to discover new sounds, grab a bite, and hang out in a laid-back environment, DogMahal is the place to be.

You can find more information at their Facebook.

Grand Forks Live Music: Town Square Farmers Market

Every Saturday morning from mid-June to mid-September, downtown Grand Forks wakes up with the Town Square Farmers Market, and it’s not just about veggies and honey – it’s  about community. You’ll find local artists, food trucks, handmade crafts, fresh products and of course: live music!

Each week, you’ll hear a different local band taking the stage at Town Square playing just about anything, from polka and folk to old-school rock. It’s the kind of place where you can grab tacos from a food truck, freshly baked sweet bread, and even a treat for your pup before kicking back with a fresh lemonade and enjoying live music – all before noon.

The best part? It’s completely free, family- and pet-friendly, plus it’s  full of charm. There’s plenty of parking around downtown, so really no excuses. Swing by, soak up the good vibes, and show some love to our local music scene!

Grand Forks Live Music: Bonus Tips

Keep an eye on the Empire Arts Center — they host some fantastic musicals, concerts, and special performances throughout the year.

UND Theatre also puts on great student-led productions throughout the year. These shows are usually held on campus at the Burtness Theatre and are very affordable — just be sure to follow their schedule, as performances are limited.

Check out the Chester Fritz Auditorium which regularly features concerts, comedians, national tours, and cultural events.:

Love dancing? The Grand Forks Social Dancing group on Facebook meets every Thursday at Eagles Bar in East Grand Forks. They offer free lessons in styles like Bachata, Cha Cha, Swing, and more. Come solo or bring a partner. All are welcome!

So, whether you’re a music lover or just curious about what’s happening in town, give one of these venues a try. You might find your new favorite band, get inspired to pick up an instrument again, or just have a really great night with even better people!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hi there, I’m Adrian! I’m originally from Monterrey, Mexico, and I arrived in this land of Ope’s and Dreams (a.k.a. Grand Forks) in the summer of 2023. Since then, I’ve loved being part of this amazing community. I have a Golden Retriever and an orange cat (I call them The Twins), and along with my wife, we enjoy checking out community events, farmers markets, and visiting local businesses (Hi, Half Brothers).

I play the bass guitar, so if some band ever needs a bassist (or just someone to jam with), I’m your guy!
