Moving to a new city (or even a new country) can feel intimidating—especially when you don’t know anyone and have no idea what to do or where to go. What to Do During Your First Year in Grand Forks: Perfecting the Language

If English isn’t your native language, a great way to improve it is by joining the Grand Forks Adult English Classes. Not only will you work on your language skills, but the course also helps students understand American culture and daily life. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to make new friends from all over the world!

What To Do During Your First Year in Grand Forks: Visit the Grand Forks Public Library

Before moving here, I thought libraries were just quiet places where people studied in silence. But wow, was I wrong! The Grand Forks Public Library has a giant indoor slide, gaming consoles (yes, you can borrow video games and play them there!), board games, and computers. They also host events every week for all ages. And if you’re a fan of manga or comics, you’ll love their dedicated section for that. Who knew a library could be this fun?

What To Do During Your First Year in Grand Forks: Go to a Hockey Game at The Ralph Engelstad Arena

One of the biggest traditions in Grand Forks from October onward is heading to The Ralph to cheer for our hockey team. Getting to the arena early to grab some food, watching live music performances during intermission, and chanting with the student section make for an unforgettable experience. Even if you’ve never watched hockey before, you’ll catch on quickly.

What To Do During Your First Year in Grand Forks: Check Out Grand Cities Games

If you love board games, card games, or role-playing games, this is your spot. You’ll find games you never even knew existed, and the staff can give you great recommendations. Plus, they have tables where people meet up to play—so don’t be surprised if you walk in for a quick visit and end up staying for hours.

What To Do During Your First Year in Grand Forks: Do Some Volunteer Work

Volunteering is a great way to meet people who share your interests and make a positive impact on your new community. One organization I recommend is Greater Grand Forks Young Professionals, which not only offers volunteer activities but also professional development events and fun social gatherings like bowling, go-karts, and bingo. Giving back and making friends at the same time! You can also always check the Greater Grand Forks: Way Cooler than You Think! Volunteer Page to see what’s available too.

What To Do During Your First Year in Grand Forks: Visit the Farmers Market

From June to September, Town Square hosts the Farmers Market every Saturday morning. Local vendors sell everything from fresh produce and homemade salsa to artisan bread and crafts. It’s a great place to spend the morning, with live bands playing, food trucks serving delicious bites, and plenty of pet-friendly spaces where you can even find treats for your furry friends.

What To Do During Your First Year in Grand Forks: Where to Eat in Grand Forks

There are plenty of good restaurants in town, but here are three local favorites you definitely need to check out:

  • Parrot’s Cay – If you love wings, this is the place (as long as you’re over 21). The shark wings are amazing, and if you like spicy food, be prepared! They also have over 30 types of beer, so you’re in for a good time!
  • Toasted Frog – A fancier spot for a nice dinner. And whatever you do, don’t leave without trying their famous fried cheesy pickles.
  • Widman’s – One of the most iconic spots in town, famous for their Chippers—potato chips covered in chocolate. Sounds weird? Maybe. But just try it. You won’t regret it!

Every August, the Downtown Street Fair takes over the city for two days. The streets turn pedestrian only, and local businesses set up stands selling everything from food and crafts to artwork. There are also food trucks, live concerts, puppy parades, and tons of outdoor activities.

Roasting s’mores, drinking hot chocolate, decorating cookies and ornaments, watching a Christmas parade, witnessing the big tree lighting, and finishing the night with a fireworks show. That’s the HollyDazzle Festival, an annual event every November that brings the holiday spirit to Grand Forks.

What To Do During Your First Year in Grand Forks: Embrace Winter Activities

If you’re from a warm place like me, you might think people just stay inside when the temperatures drop. Nope! In Grand Forks, winter is a season full of activities. You can ice skate at Town Square, sled down the hills at Lincoln Park, or even try cross-country skiing on the Greenway.

So, if you’re new to town (or thinking about moving here), don’t worry—there’s plenty to do! Whether you’re looking for fun, food, or new friends, Grand Forks has something for everyone. And remember, if someone invites you to a potluck, say yes, you never know if you’ll find yourself leaving with a new best friend and a plate of leftover hotdish.
