Forks in the Road: Running Spots and Routes Around Greater Grand Forks

Running in Grand Forks

One of my favorite parts of living in the GF area is the incredible running (or walking) trails that are here locally! Sure, there’s only a limited time when walking and running outside is in season – but when it is, the trails provided in town are unbeatable!

If you’re just looking to go on a quick run, clear your head on a relaxing walk, or go the distance, I’ve got two trails that you must check out! They’re both safe, easy to find, and honestly make you appreciate how cool Grand Forks can be!

Running in Grand Forks: The Greenway

You probably already know this one, The Greenway winds along the Red River, through downtown, by Riverside Park, and it’s close to campus. Therefore, if you haven’t taken the time to enjoy it you’re missing out!

  • It’s super accessible (lots of entry points)
  • It’s really pretty! The greenway has great sights that include bridges, trees, river views, and wildflowers
  • Works for running, walking, rollerblading, or it’s even a nice spot lay out and enjoy a book or have a picnic!

Also: There are so many good photo spots — the Demers bridge, riverside overlooks, and golden hour sunsets that hit just right! If you haven’t explored the Greenway yet, it’s time! With over 20 miles of multi-use trails, there’s always something new to see!

Running in Grand Forks: King’s Walk Trail

This one’s located at the south end of town, next to King’s Walk Golf Course. It’s quieter, more open, and feels like a little getaway compared to my usual route at the Greenway. To get access to this path, all I did was park by Kings Walk and the path was right there!

  • On this trail, you get pond views, open skies, and if you go at the right time – a really great opportunity to soak up a classic Grand Forks sunset!

This is my new favorite spot for when I want to clear my head without running into a bunch of people. It’s also a great spot if you just want to get some steps in while listening to a podcast or playlist!

Running in Grand Forks: The Beach Party 5K

If you need a reason to get out there, mark your calendar for Friday, August 23rd. The Beach Party 5K is happening on the Greenway. It’s a casual evening run with a summer theme, expect a laid-back route, sunset views, and a few beachy obstacles that make the race way more fun! Whether you’re walking, jogging, or just showing up for fun it’s a great way to try something new and challenge yourself!

Running in Grand Forks: Get out of Town!

There are also many great spots outside of our city limits. Turtle River State Park has some amazing trails for some less flat training. There are also tons of miles available on the Agassiz Recreational Trail on the Minnesota side. If you’re looking to switch it up too, try exploring any of our surrounding area’s regional towns for a different view! There are plenty of nice routes around Crookston, Larimore, Gilby, and more!
