Like many of you here, I absolutely love Mexican food. And when I arrived in this city, I quickly realized that, fortunately, we’ve got quite a few (and very good) options for any occasion. Whether you’re looking for something quick, a nice sit-down restaurant, or a spot that feels like an authentic Mexican eatery, Grand Forks has exactly what you need. So, in this article, I’ll give you my top five Mexican restaurant recommendations—“¡Provecho!”

Mexican Eats in Grand Forks: Chicago Burritos
If you’re looking for fast service and hearty portions, Chicago Burritos is the place for you. Located at 3221 32nd Ave S Suite 300, this spot serves up generously portioned dishes that’ll leave you wondering if you’re going to need a box.
One thing you’ll immediately notice is that their tortilla chips are delicious. The place isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and the staff is friendly. I recommend the “Burrito Laredo,” which comes with steak, bacon, chorizo, shrimp cooked in spicy sauce, árbol chiles, rice, mozzarella cheese, and beans. And, if you’re like me, don’t miss out on the agua de Jamaica—it’s fantastic. If you’re pressed for time, this is the spot to hit up, especially during your lunch break.
Mexican Eats in Grand Forks: Charras and Tequila
Charras and Tequila is one of the most charming restaurants in town, offering a fantastic experience thanks to its decor and vibe.
Not only does the food hit the spot, but they also have a great selection of cocktails—margaritas, wines, beers, and of course, those refreshing “aguas frescas” straight from Mexico.
For an appetizer, I highly recommend the Queso Fundido, which is loaded with asadero cheese, white cheese, chorizo, pico de gallo, and they’ll throw in some tortillas for good measure. For your main course, try the Charras Special: chicken, shrimp, peppers, squash, poblano cream, cheese, rice, and avocado.
For me, Charras and Tequila is perfect for a nice dinner with friends or that special someone. It’s located at 3915 32nd Ave So.
Mexican Eats in Grand Forks: Las Delicias de la Abuela
Every restaurant listed here is great (I’ve been to all of them to check them out personally!), but for me, Las Delicias de la Abuela is hands-down my favorite Mexican restaurant in Grand Forks because it feels like a true, traditional Mexican eatery.
From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a bowl of “Sopa de Fideos” (noodle soup), tortilla chips, and salsa (Pro tip: if you’re a fan of spicy salsa, they’ve got a secret one you can ask the waiters for).
The food here takes a little longer to prepare, so I recommend coming when you’ve got enough time to enjoy the meal without rushing.
I’m a big fan of their enchiladas (both green and red), and my wife loves their “Agua Chile” (shrimp marinated in lime juice). They also have daily specials, and their desserts are great too—personally, I love the fried ice cream.
The place is spacious, and they’re adding a bar to expand their services. You can find them at 601 University Ave.
Mexican Eats in Grand Forks: El Gordito
Like Chicago Burritos, El Gordito is perfect if you’re short on time because the service is lightning fast. Their specialty is tacos, and they’ve got a variety of salsa, plus they also offer beef stews and pupusas. Oh, and don’t forget to grab a Mexican soda while you’re at it. I recommend the Taco Plate, which comes with two tacos, rice, and beans. They’ve got taco deals on different days, so keep an eye out for some sweet offers.
El Gordito is a small spot located at 3000 32nd Ave S, and the quick service makes it a solid choice when you’re pressed for time.

Mexican Eats in Grand Forks: Melissa’s Mobile Cocina
Melissa’s Mobile Cocina is a food truck you’ll find at various events around the city, like the Farmers Market. My favorite dish here is their barbacoa tacos, though they’re not always available. Overall, everything they serve is delicious, but I’ve got to mention that their green salsa is one of my all-time favorites. Also, make sure to keep an eye out because they will be opening up a restaurant soon!
If you spot their food truck at an event in town, don’t hesitate to stop by!
In Grand Forks, we have many different options to enjoy Mexican food, each with its own unique twist. So, whether you’re looking for something quick, a cozy spot, or an authentic experience, you’re sure to find something you’ll love. Enjoy your meal and buen provecho!
