You Shell Not Pass: The Quest for the Perfect Taco

Anyone who knows anything about me knows how much I love tacos. I could literally eat tacos for every meal. If you want to encourage me out of the house on a cold winter day a simple, “Let’s have tacos.” will do the trick. Since people in the Midwest tend to shy away from things that are too spicy, you may think there are no good to be found. I’m here to tell you that you are absolutely, one hundred percent incorrect. There are tacos in Grand Forks for every heat level and every occasion.

Tacos in Grand Forks: Let’s Do Lunch

Working downtown in the City of Grand Forks has some fantastic advantages. The scenery is gorgeous, the Greenway is there for a quick stroll, and eating options are amazing. But if you are like me, tacos are a perfect midday pick-me-up.

Joe Black’s

Joe Black’s taco basket is my go-to lunch. I prefer hard shells, but they also serve up soft shells. If you are feeling “exotic”, try the delicious shrimp tacos.

The Hub Pub

The Hub Pub offers 3rd Street tacos, their take on street tacos. Three heaping tacos (pork, chicken, beef or shrimp) pair perfectly with chips and fresh pico de gallo. I like to change it up and get three different kinds of tacos all at once – always delicious.

Black Widow Café

You wouldn’t think a hardware store would offer some of the best tacos, but tucked away inside the Home of Economy, Black Widow Café offers some very traditional Mexican eats. I tried their street tacos with fresh avocado and I have to say they were amazing! Meals come with a side of rice and beans, so you can carb-load and be energized for the rest of the day.

Tacos in Grand Forks: Taco-bout town

With so many activities and things to explore in the Grand Forks region, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Food trucks and food courts are there to keep you satisfied and in a fantastic mood and they also happen to be taco experts.

Melissa’s Mobile Cocina

Another fantastic choice for authentic Mexican food. Melissa is most well-known for her tacos de birria, a Mexican stew meat wrapped in fried tortillas with a side of consomé to dip. Heaven. This is one food truck you’ll want to stalk, because if you’re a latecomer like me you may not get to try these amazing concoctions. If you do miss out, don’t despair – all Mellissa’s tacos are amazing.

Oof Da Tacos

Once again, I’m going to talk about frybread tacos. Oof Da Tacos notoriety in the region abounds and they pop up at festival and events throughout the region. You’ll more than likely need to wait in line when this food truck pulls up, but trust me, it’s worth it.

El Gordito

This treasure is hidden in the Columbia Mall, and it’s worth it to seek them out. After an early morning of shopping, swing by the food court and give these tacos a chance. If you happen to be there on a Tuesday, try their BOGO tacos. Twice the tacos for the same price!

Casa Mexico

Located in East Grand Forks, Casa Mexico is yet another authentic restaurant that has so many wonderful choices. Their carnitas are my go-to, washed down with a tasty margarita.

Tacos in Grand Forks: Romantic Tacos

Nothing says romance like something wrapped in a tortilla. Here are some of my favorite date night spots:

Toasted Frog

I’m sure if you ask anyone around here for a great date night recommendation, the Toasted Frog will come up. And it should! Their food and atmosphere offer the perfect environment for a quiet night out with your sweetie. Most will recommend the fried pickles, but I want to talk a bit about the fish tacos. Grilled mahi-mahi, fresh mango salsa and all the fixings make for a delicious, unique taco.

Charras and Tequila

A newer addition to the Grand Forks restaurant scene, Charras does not disappoint. Top shelf tequila, tableside guacamole, and handmade churros all make this place unique. If you luck out, you may go on an evening they are serving quesabirrias. If you are, don’t hesitate – order now!

Tacos in Grand Forks: Tacos of the Evening

Let’s be honest, sometimes we stay up way past bedtime. And sometimes, we crave food way past dinnertime. Well, there are tacos to be had at almost any hour around here. Including a Grand Forks icon.

Red Pepper

You cannot talk about the taco scene in Grand Forks without talking about the Red Pepper. While their grinders are always a popular choice, their simple classic tacos are a crowd pleaser as well. Get creative and order your taco Schneider style. Same as their regular taco, but topped with the signature Red Pepper “white sauce” and enchilada sauce. You’ll thank me.

Brewski’s

Thursdays at Brewski’s in Thompson is the place to be! Taco day! All day taco specials, including taco salads, fry bread tacos, and my personal favorite, the build-your-own taco bar. Chicken, beef, pork, beans, veggies, queso, cheese, salsa, and everything imaginable.  I also recommend their taco pizza on Thursdays or any night. The kitchen stays open until 9 PM.

Whew! Well, there you have it. All the tacos your heart could desire. I would like to think I worked really hard on this piece, but let’s be honest – this wasn’t work. This was heaven. Let’s share a taco soon!
