About The Author

My name is Simone Tillman. I am an Air Force veteran and have been living in the Grand Forks area with my husband for 10 years. Keeping my kids active and learning is of utmost importance to me, so I find pleasure diving into a variety of activities within the community. I am passionate about creating visual art through acrylic and oil paintings, as well as graphite drawings. Tapping into the artist community has been so rewarding and unlocked a whole new side of the Forks. I’m excited to be a part of the team and share small peeks into what makes Grand Forks cooler, as a wife, mom, business owner, and artist.

1. Local Libraries

The GF Public Library is such a gem, it’s unlike any other library I have ever been to. They plan events monthly for every age, from baby story time, gaming nights for the teens, and even family fun nights for the whole gang to come together. They have quiet workspaces if you have a quick deadline to meet and an awesome play area for the kids, which comes in handy if you’re a parent who sometimes has to multitask deadlines and playtime. The GF Public Library cultivates a welcoming environment and community to do the things you love most. Whether you’re looking to meet new friends or explore niche hobbies with the friends you already have, there’s an event catered to you.

Similar to the GF Public Library, East Grand Forks Public Library offers a variety of opportunities and activities to come together. You can craft with the littles, build expansive lego-scapes, explore your love of anime, or even participate in puzzle exchanges. We love that even though we are not Minnesota natives, we are able to participate in all the fun clubs they offer, and even check out books. Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need for a whole new library experience.

2. Northern Air Action Park

If you’re looking for a cool date night activity to break up monotony, a fun place to host the kids’ birthday, or just an indoor activity to peak adrenaline, Northern Air has what you need. Between axe throwing, virtual reality, laser tag, arcade games, go karts, and a trampoline park, you’ve got options that don’t skimp on excitement. For us, it’s always nice to have an adventure or make a lasting memory with a new experience. I’ve noticed over time, the things that usually stick with me memory wise are the new activities we’re able to experience together.

3. Alerus Center/Splasher’s of the South Seas/Canad Inns

When the days begin to get colder, it can be nice to take a break from reality and enjoy a “staycation”. The perfect “staycation” is so convenient at Canad Inns. The kids can play during the day at the huge indoor water park, Splasher’s, and you can check out who’s in town at the Alerus Center and catch a vibey concert. Then, after an exciting, yet exhausting day, you can slide into bed at the hotel without the frustration of having to fight traffic home. All three facilities are connected, making navigating with larger families a breeze. In addition to the water park and Alerus Center, the hotel has a cool gaming lounge called Playmakers for adults and nice bar to wind down the evening. There will be no shortage of excitement as long as you’re willing to do a little prep work in advance.

4. Grand Forks Parks District Activities

I’ve found one of the easiest ways to stay in the know of local events and sports is through the Grand Forks Parks District. In most areas, the park district is mainly active in the summer, but in Grand Forks that’s not the case! The Parks District offers youth programs, public skating, hockey, indoor volleyball leagues, open gyms for all ages, and a long list of other seasonal activities. It’s always exciting to see how they partner with local entities to host a variety of events, shows, and classes.

5. Red River Valley Athletics

If you’re like me and have energetic kids, a place to burn their energy off is essential! That being said, when we were introduced to Red River Valley Athletics open gym and recreational gymnastics, we were ecstatic. They offer programs for preschool children to help build their listening skills and coordination, and a variety of ninja and recreational courses for all ages. It’s a great place to cultivate skill within a kid who has a passion for gymnastics or to simply enjoy the foam pits and trampolines during the open play at the gym. The best part is they can even host birthday parties which is a cool spin on your regular cake and ice cream.

6. North Dakota Museum of Art

The NDMOA is a hidden gem, I often find that people who are new to the community don’t realize how much they offer. They have beautiful exhibitions of local artists, as well as a shop to browse and build your art collection. After perusing some beautiful art, stop by the café located inside the museum and enjoy a quick bite from their delicious lunch menu. And before you go take home some art for the kids, NDMOA partners with other community entities like the library and Art Wise to distribute take and make crafts. Pro-tip: save the card that describes the art style, craft, and supply list so you can reuse them in years to come as your kids grow older and want to enjoy a craft and also understand the history behind it.

7. Choice Health & Fitness

Choice Health & Fitness is pretty much a one stop shop for all your physical needs. They offer everything from group exercise classes to private tennis lessons. Within their facilities, you’ll find a beautiful indoor pool, saunas, a variety of free weights, and stationary machines to suit almost any need. Did I mention they offer personal training if you’re new to the gym world or just seeking to break a new goal? If that’s not enough to make you want to check them out, they also have childcare within their facility AND they have a unique partnership with the YMCA. So, if Choice’s variety of group classes, sports, or weights wasn’t enough to entice you, they have more options through the Y. It’s nice to know that the money spent on membership here goes a long way for you and your family and there’s always something new to keep pushing you.
