About The Author

Hi there! My name is Kayla Elke and I am a Grand Forks county native. I was born and raised in Gilby, about 30 minutes northwest of Grand Forks. As luck would have it, we moved back to Gilby in 2014, when I started working as a Physical Therapist for Altru’s Regional Therapy department.  I enjoy spending time with my family, all things crafty, and the great outdoors. In my spare time I am also very active in the Gilby community, spending time as a volunteer barista, charcuterie maker, and murder mystery party host. I love the Grand Forks area and surrounding communities – there is truly so much to explore and enjoy! I can’t wait to share some of the hidden gems of Grand Forks with you.

1. Rhombus Guys

A local favorite, Rhombus Guys, has been a Grand Forks staple for well over a decade. Nestled in the heart of downtown, Rhombus features appetizers, salads, sandwiches and of course a plethora of delicious and original pizzas. Ope! Let me sneak right by ya and grab the ranch for a Midwesterner pizza,  a delicious combination of gooey mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, beef, bacon, green peppers and onions. O try the Big Dogz pizza,  with spicy jalapenos, olives, pepperoni and sausage named after local radio DJs. In addition to their amazing menu, Rhombus has karaoke and open mic nights, and if you need a little liquid courage to get up on the stage and belt your heart out, don’t worry, they have that covered, too. Rhombus features a variety of tap beers including local brews, specialty cocktails, and wine with daily happy hour specials. Recently, Rhombus Guys expanded to the frozen pizza aisle of Hugo’s Supermarkets and select other stores in the region, allowing you to take and bake your favorite in the comfort of your own home.

2. Up North Pizza Pub

Just across the river in East Grand Forks, you will find Up North Pizza Pub. Up North serves up appetizers, salads, soup, sandwiches, pasta, and of course – pizza! Whether you choose from the specialty pizza menu or build your own, you are certain to find something to hit the spot. A personal favorite is “Ode to Pepp”, a nod to another Grand Forks favorite – The Red Pepper Grinder. Topped with taco sauce, ham and turkey, taco meat, and grinder sauce, you will be sure to love this tasty mash up. If you just can’t decide, might I suggest checking out their social media page to find the featured Pizza of the Week, which often features unique topping combinations that are sure to leave you demanding that it becomes a menu staple. For those with a competitive spirit, check out their trivia nights for a chance to win prizes, with their trivia themes changing frequently.  Up North also has a game room which they rent out for private parties and events. Just give them a call to reserve a time and they will have the room and food ready for you!

3. Mike’s Pizza & Pub

Also in East Grand Forks, Mike’s Pizza has been serving the area since 1964. Mike’s makes their dough and sauces fresh daily from scratch for the best flavor, and with an expansive menu including 22 toppings to choose from, there is something for everyone here. Try the Eastside Special, topped with beef, pepperoni, Canadian bacon and sausage – its a meat lovers dream! After you have enjoyed a delicious pizza or the all you can eat lunch buffet, end your meal with one of 12 different hand scooped ice cream flavors for dessert. Your taste buds will thank you!

4. Popolino’s Pizza

Open late daily and extra late night from Thursday to Saturdays (4am late!), Popolino’s takes pride in serving a community with diverse and busy schedules. Their website also has online ordering for pick up or delivery to enjoy delicious, fresh baked pizza and daily specials in the comfort of your own home. And even better – Popolino’s has an amazing loyalty program allowing you to earn rewards like free pop, breadsticks, or a huge discount on your pizza. Popolino’s loves to give back to the community as well. If you opt to fundraise through them, 25% of all money raised is donated back to your cause! What a tasty way to raise funds for your school or organization.

5. Deek’s Pizza

Like Popolino’s, Deek’s Pizza stays open and delivers late to cater to any schedule. To make things even easier, you can order right on their app to have one of 7 different pizza flavors (or your own custom creation)  delivered right to your door. And don’t forget the wings and breadsticks to make it a complete smorgasbord of deliciousness! If you are a freak for Deek’s consider signing up for their ambassador program. Ambassadors get to spread the word about how awesome Deek’s is and in return you can earn pizza, swag, and gift cards – all for just loving pizza!

6. Italian Moon

A Grand Forks staple since 1965, the Italian Moon specializes in pizza and Mexican food, but their menu and buffet goes so far beyond that. Choose from a specialty pizza or calzone, or build your own, there is something to please everyone at the Moon. The Italian Moon rewards loyal customers with a rewards program to earn free and discounted food items. If you looking to have your pizza party catered, the Italian Moon is equipped to cater any event, big or small!

7. Mamma Beck’s

If you want to head out of town, try Mamma Beck’s in Reynolds. This small-town gem flies under the radar but is not to be missed. Located in Weber’s Meat Market, Mamma Beck’s pizzeria offers freshly made pizzas, grinders, burgers, and more. If you find yourself in Reynolds on a Tuesday night, you can grab a slice of Mamma Beck’s pizza and a cold one for just $5.75 at the Beehive Bar. To order, contact the crew at 701-847-2091, grab your slices, and enjoy a scenic drive back to Grand Forks.

I don’t know about you folks, but my mouth is watering. Now, the only choice is where to eat first! One can’t go wrong at any of these restaurants – make sure to try them all. You won’t be disappointed!
