About The Author

Hello! My name is Cassandra Van Dell. I’ve lived in Greater Grand Forks for over a decade now, and I’m proud to call this place home. During my time here, I’ve worked in the higher education and healthcare industries. In my free time, I enjoy photography, attending local events, sewing, painting, and spending time with my husband and our two dogs. There’s plenty to do in Grand Forks, and I’m excited to share a few of my favorite adventures with you and what I love about this region!

1. For Those Who Prefer a Night In: Build a Fort

Distance From Grand Forks: 0 Miles

Remember when you were a kid and built a fort in the living room? Well, you are never too old to give this camping adventure a try. I recently discovered a company based in Fargo that offers kits to build your indoor or outdoor fort. The themes range from a safari adventure to a large Northwoods buffalo plaid-themed tent. I love how their service includes delivery and set-up so that you can enjoy your ultimate camping adventure in your own backyard. This would be perfect for first-time campers, who want to sleep under the stars, but stay close to home. Check them out here.

2. A Unique Urban Experience: Camp in the Heart of Downtown East Grand Forks

Distance From Grand Forks: 0 Miles

You can sleep under the stars and in the heart of downtown by camping at the Red River Recreation Campground in East Grand Forks. The campground is nestled along the river, offering a great way to experience the feel of nature, while within walking distance of all the great shopping and restaurants in Greater Grand Forks. Don’t forget to bring your bikes and explore the trails along The Greenway!

3. Scenic Hiking Trails: Turtle River

Distance From Grand Forks: 22 Miles

Turtle River State Park has many scenic campsites and cabins for rent if you are seeking an outdoorsy adventure. It’s a great spot to hike with over 12 miles of trails along the wooded valley, and is dog-friendly! Turtle River State Park also offers cabin rentals for larger groups or events, making it a great spot for weddings, reunions, and more.

4. Fun and Fishing: Larimore Dam

Distance From Grand Forks: 28 Miles

The Larimore Dam and Campsite offers a beach area for swimming and a boat ramp for small canoes or paddle boats. You often see people fishing in this location, or biking on the three-and-a-half-mile trail connected to the recreation area. It’s the perfect spot immerse yourself in nature  just on the outskirts of town.

5. Lake Life: Mentor, Minnesota

Distance From Grand Forks: 45 Miles

One of my favorite places to stare at the stars is just a quick drive from Grand Forks. I love visiting Maple Lake during the summer holidays, sitting around the fire with family, and creating memories. Mentor sports an RV park and campsite with public access to the lake for boating, fishing, and more. Be sure to check out the original and locally famous Rhombus House of Pizza during your visit to Mentor for some of the most unique flavors of ‘za.

6. Chase the Northern Lights: Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area or Icelandic State Park

Distance From Grand Forks: 1 ½ Hour Drive

Just over an hour north of Grand Forks, two state parks and recreation areas are embedded in one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in North Dakota. Boaters, swimmers, and fishermen will find this region a paradise of summer activity. The open skies at night are perfect if you’re looking to spot the northern lights and pitch a tent.

7. Head to the Headwaters: Itasca State Park

Distance From Grand Forks: 2-Hour Drive

There are over 200 campsites nestled in Itasca, Minnesota’s oldest State Park. With over 100 lakes in the park, water activities rule the summer including, kayaking, boating, and paddle boarding. During your visit to the park, don’t miss your opportunity to stand at the headwaters of the Mississippi River, and if you are feeling brave, you can walk across the river on top of rocks. If camping is not your thing, cabin rentals and resorts speckle the area.

8. Glamping Adventure: Getaway House

Distance from Grand Forks: 4-Hour Drive

Recently, I’ve enjoyed glamping. It’s a twist on camping but with all the amenities included. My friend and I discovered a glamping spot just a few hours from Greater Grand Forks. If you’re looking for a weekend road trip, I’d recommend the Getaway House in Willow River, Minnesota to relax and recharge in nature.

9. A Musical Western North Dakota Trip:  Medora

Distance From Grand Forks: 5 ½ Hour Drive

Last summer was my first time visiting Medora and staying at the local campsite. If the idea of setting up a tent does not interest you, check out some car conversion kits to turn your vehicle into a camper. It saved us lots of time setting up our site and we had more time to explore the town and check out the famous Medora Musical and Pitchfork Fondue. Feeling extra adventurous? Continue driving west after your camping adventure in Medora and head to Montana. The views from Glacier National Park are worth the extra drive!

10. Visit Our Neighbors in South Dakota: Under Canvas

Distance: 9-hour Drive

If you are looking to head south for a road trip, the Mount Rushmore area offers rolling landscape and tons of history. A few years ago, we discovered a glamping spot called Under Canvas, and I can’t wait to go back there someday. The tents have a clear top to view the stars at night and are equipped with a full bathroom and fireplace. It’s a cozy and luxurious camping option for those who don’t enjoy camping but still want to sleep under the stars.

11. For the Experienced Road Trippers: Tour the Upper Peninsula Michigan

Distance: 9 1/2 Hour Drive

If you are seeking a longer and picturesque road trip adventure and have a few extra days to spare, I’d highly recommend adding a trip through the upper peninsula to your bucket list. You can even loop in some of the ideas above if you want to experience it all. The beaches along the upper peninsula are breathtaking, and unique camping-style opportunities make adventures even more fun. If “Yurt” up for an adventure, check out the Paddler’s Campsite and Yurts on Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Unlike a typical tenting experience, yurts let you take in the clear skies above.

Camping is the perfect way to recharge and experience the nature around us this summer. Grab your camping gear, ignite your sense of adventure, and start planning your next unforgettable outdoor excursion!
