A Walk in the Park: 4 Greater Grand Forks Parks for Families to Explore

We are in “Fool’s Spring” in Grand Forks as temperatures start to creep above 40 degrees. But we are anything but fools to live here and what makes us cooler in the Greater Grand Forks area is the abundance of outdoor activities to suit any age.

With an active family of three kiddos, and a dog, all with endless energy, looking for special outdoor places and activities is a regular feature of weekend activities. For this article, I’m going to share four of my family’s favorite area parks and playgrounds that are definitely worth checking out any time of the year.

Grand Forks Parks: The Greenway

Some say disc golf. Some call it frolf. Whatever you name it, the Greenway is home to three disc golf courses – Lincoln Park & Riverside Park courses in Grand Forks, and Zavoral Park in East Grand Forks. This 21-mile paved pathway runs along the Red River and spans several parks and multi-purpose trails. After the devastating Flood of 1997, the Greenway was designed with flood protection in mind and features approximately 2,200 acres of natural open space in the heart of Grand Forks, ND and East Grand Forks, MN. A cycling enthusiast’s dream!

Grand Forks Parks: Sertoma Park & Japanese Garden

Sertoma Park and Japanese Garden is a tranquil oasis within city limits. The Japanese Garden with rock sculptures and meditation area was gifted by Grand Forks’ sister city of Awano, Japan. The bicycle/walking trails run through and around the park. Another feature is Ali’s Boundless Playground. Opened in 2009, Ali Karpenko’s vision was an outdoor play area accessible for all and inclusive of children with disabilities. We are grateful for Ali’s perseverance and commitment to our community as generations of child continue to enjoy this wonderful playground.

Grand Forks Parks: Sherlock Forest Playground

Originally built in 2003, Sherlock Forest Playground is located in East Grand Forks. This beloved, and incredibly popular wooden play area is complete with castles, bridges, and even, a dragon! It is also conveniently located near the East Ground Forks swimming pool. On hot summer days, if you listen closely you will hear the music of the fabled blue Brain Freeze ice cream truck driving by.

Grand Forks Parks: Turtle River State Park

Looking for a more rustic adventure? Turtle River State Park has got you covered. With over 12 miles of walking trails, you decide your path. Perfect for any occasion, cabins, campsites (modern and primitive), and shelters are available for rent – I have been to work retreats, weddings, and a quinceañera in the Woodland Lodge and all were absolutely, fabulous experiences. They also host programs all throughout the year. In the spring and summer, you’ll find classes like camping 101, fishing instruction, and water games. In the fall and winter families can learn about things like making nature art, winter hiking, and wayfinding.

In addition to parks, the Grand Forks downtown district continues to make significant improvements to its walkability score. Emerging with public art and open spaces, one can easily download a Greenway map and appreciate the conservation efforts of the City and partners while accessing the amenities a growing family requires.
